Computer Forensics Investigators - What Do They Do?

Computer forensics courses may be new to some of us out there. One of the reasons may be because the course is not made known to the public as much as a career such as doctors, nurses, teachers and policemen. Everyone knows what forensics is but what they do not know are the branches in forensics and this course is one of the branches.

Technology is getting more and more advance each day and the job scope gets larger and larger each and every single day. Investigation involves investigating the possible crimes at any crime scenes involving the use of computers or any digital devises as evidence. Here, you may find the basic things that an investigator does. Investigator first needs to prepare evidence and chain of custody forms.

Evidence forms will contain the name of the device, the measurements, model, and serial numbers. This form is to ensure that there will be no confusions of devices and that particular device is for one particular case and will not be mixed up. Chain of custody forms answers the five questions of "what", "when", "who", "where", "why" and "how" of the particular evidence.

Computer Forensics Investigators - What Do They Do?

After filling up those forms, the investigator will have to analyse on how to retrieve the data from the device. There are several things that a computer forensic investigator has to follow and below are a few examples:

not to boot a computer when it is off not to off a computer when it is on protect the evidence from getting destroyed by using a write protection software

When analyzing the data, the investigator has to make sure that every section of the device is checked. If it is regarding an email account, the data obtained has to be not only from the inbox but also sent files, drafts, spam mails, trash bins and other links provided by the email address provider. If it is the whole computer, then there is the necessity to check the temp files, recycle bin, recent link file, internet history, printed files, and also retrieve deleted files by using trustworthy software.

Definition of Forensic Science

Forensics is a field of science dedicated to the methodical gathering and analysis of evidence to establish facts that can be presented in a legal proceeding. Though crime scenes and laboratories are perhaps, most often associated with forensics, there is also computer or network forensics, forensic accounting, forensic engineering and forensic psychiatry, among other specialized fields that are today an integral part of forensics. In the United States of America, forensics was a fairly obscure topic for the general public until the double-murder trial of Orenthal James Simpson in 1995. In the historic case that gripped the entire nation, weeks of testimony were heard on DNA blood evidence, shoeprint evidence, fiber evidence and other forensics. Since then, a bevy of forensics-based television shows have regularly topped the ratings, making it a household word.

Those who collect forensic evidence must follow strict procedures to protect the evidence from getting contaminated or destroyed, and must preserve the chain of custody. Since science is unbiased and sound, forensics is considered a very critical part of any investigation. While witnesses may often be mistaken, have credibility issues, hold a stake in the outcome, have fading memories, or even pass away, forensics "tells the same story" no matter how many times it is tested, or how many years have passed.

The field of forensics is so vast that it requires specialists or criminalists at every point of investigation, from tire track analysis, to odontology, to the lands and grooves that make every gun barrel unique. From microscopic evidence and transfer evidence such as fibers and hair, to blood splatter and forensic entomology, there are many fields of specialization within forensic science.

Definition of Forensic Science

Though forensics deals with circumstantial evidence, it is often widely considered as the best and the most compelling evidence that any prosecution or defense lawyer can have in his or her arsenal. Some people suggest that the public's awareness of forensic science might be potentially compromising to law enforcement, producing educated criminals who might be more apt to try and effect a clean crime scene. Experts generally tend to believe that it is nearly impossible to avoid leaving behind trace evidence at a crime scene, even when extraordinary efforts are made to the contrary.

Who Does This Email Address Belong To? How to Find Who Owns an Email Address Without Sweating

We receive spam email everyday and there is nothing worst than receiving emails that will damage your system. At this junction you will be curious to know who actually sent you that kind of mail, though in the past, it used to be hard to find out who an email address belongs to but thanks to technology because you can actually find out who sent such emails in a matter of seconds.

It's very common for people to rush to search engines when they are trying to find out an email address belongs to or where the email is coming from but its quite unfortunate because search engines won't help you either. This is because search engines uses programs that are called crawlers or spiders that search websites around the world, pictures of such website are taken. After taking the pictures of websites they now record every word such that when you type the word (People call such word keywords) or phrase they automatically link you to the site.

This technique abducted by search engine is only good for when you are looking for something online and cannot give you such information as looking for an email ( except of us the owner of the owner of that email has ever listed his or her email address somewhere on the internet prior to your search ). However, there are better search options called reverse email look up that help you locate who an email address belongs to.

Who Does This Email Address Belong To? How to Find Who Owns an Email Address Without Sweating

They give you a more detailed look up than a regular search engine. Though, they use almost the same technique like the search engines but they go a step further by checking email address directories and they are also check for available records that are available.

If you need to find who the email address belongs to. Just go to any reverse email lookup service, enter the email address in the search column, press the search button and in a matter of seconds it will give you the name, ip address and the home address of the owner of the email address instantly. How Technology Has Changed Accounting

Technology has laid its impression on almost every field today. There is hardly anything that has not been improved or enhanced by the technology. With all the improvement and development going, the need for getting better is still on. Accounting is not an exception when it comes to the alterations and changes produced by technology. So if you're wondering how technology has changed accounting then there are few points that you might feel worth reading.

Accounting is equally old as civilization. It existed from the time of the invention of abacus. After that, came the commercial revolution that introduced double-entry bookkeeping. Also, at that time, there were hardly any industries, factories and organizations that have to be looked after to calculate the profit, losses and other tax statements to keep the business running smoothly. In the early times, people were hardly aware of different formulas and applications applied in the field of accounting. But today accounting is commonly offered as a major study subject.

Although we can say that the changes and updates in the field of accounting have not been made quickly but slowly and steadily, the methods, techniques and principles of accounting have been modified and improved with time. As compared to the 20th century, today we have computers and laptops that completely eliminate the requirement of calculators, pencils and ledgers in just one fell swoop. Now it has become easier and simpler for the accountants to keep a record of the information so that they can eliminate the most frequent mistakes completely. Not only it has provided greater accountability and efficiency but has also transformed the accounting phase considerably.

How Technology Has Changed Accounting

Although everything has its own qualities and flaws and same can be said about the technology. The electronic information is subjected to sabotage and also several frauds can be made by processing the information. Such kind of illegal activities have opened a new area of forensic accounting. It helps in keeping a track on frauds.

The improvement in the field of accounting has not only assisted the organization and businesses but has also allowed people to maintain a track on their personal money. We are now provided with more facilities like online banking, and a variety of accounting software that helps us in calculating our taxes, automatic payment of various bills, etc. We should be perhaps thankful to the technology for bringing such an excellent change in the field of accountancy and providing common people with such a comfortable and easy to manage life as now we don't have to depend upon the calculator anymore!

Thus, we can see that technological improvements to accounting have entered every sphere of our lives - be it personal or professional. And it is with a lot of advantages for the end user - whether it is an accounting professional or a regular person like you and me.

Computer Forensics

Computer forensics is the process of investigating computer systems by collecting and analyzing computer-related evidence and data to determine their illegal or unauthorized involvement in crimes or frauds. This relatively new field is used by law enforcement, military, intelligence agencies, and businesses. Computer evidence processing protocols are scrupulously observed in the process, as the findings should be presented in a court of law.

Not merely confined to computer data recovery alone, computer forensics is a fast-growing investigative technique used by a forensic specialist for retrieving data that has been electronically stored or encrypted on digital media such as a personal or work computer. Law enforcement agencies use computer forensics to gather evidence about a suspect or known criminal. Computer forensics experts can detect rogue employees or contractors who are leaking critical information such as company plans or sensitive customer data.

Many computer forensics professionals learn the techniques on the job in law enforcement or computer security positions. But with the field expanding widely, employers are currently looking for candidates with certificate programs and formal education in computer forensics, which are available from many institutions. The formal education programs offer instructions on pertinent legal issues, computer skills, and forensic tools that they will need while working as computer forensics professionals.

Computer Forensics

They should have extensive knowledge of computer systems and programs and the ability to retrieve information from them. Often, they are required to retrieve data that has been deleted from the device. For this, the specialist makes use of particular computer forensics software and other tools.

As the specialist works with evidence involved in a criminal or civil case, he/she takes particular care to properly document all the work done to the computer and information found from it. No licensure requirements exist for practicing as a computer forensics specialist. However, voluntary credentials should be provided. These are called Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and the Certified Computer Examiner (CCE). Computer forensics consulting is also a fast-growing field.

Computer forensics has become an integral part of law enforcement agencies, defense forces, corporations, and large institutions as they all deal with computer offences.

Computer Forensics Software

Computer forensics software programs are used to detect computer frauds, crimes, etc., automatically, without retaining the services of a computer forensic specialist. Software solution processes detect operations done on a computer illegally or without authorization.

The detection by these tools or software is documented and produced in a court of law.

A number of companies such as AccessData and WetStone are developing applications that automatically generate forensic responses, eliminating the services of a computer forensic specialist. By installing such software, a lot of expenditure can be eliminated.

Computer Forensics Software

It is only when the software fails or finds itself inadequate that computer forensics consultants are called in. The latest developments indicate that software solutions for computer frauds and crimes are turning effective.

These software programs promise to manage everything from copying hard disks to evaluating evidence. Most of them cost around ,000 per license so that anyone with security concerns can purchase them and get them installed without any hassle.

Utah-based AccessData has released a forensic tool kit to complement a previously limited consulting business. WetStone Technologies uses software for helping companies address steganography, the process by which nefarious employees encrypt and embed data within e-mail attachments. X-Ways Forensics, the forensic edition of Winhex, has software solutions galore with forensic features.

There are hundreds of other software kits that are continuously updating, with the incidence of sharper cyber-specific crimes. Such software can natively interpret and show the directory structure and mismanagement of the system, with recovery facilities.

These are pro-active software solutions that can detect unauthorized operations as and when these are done.

There are also numerous software suites that will go after specific instances of wrong-doing. Guidance Software sticks to software applications. Its flagship product, EnCase, is marketed as a full-service forensic tool. With the development of more and more software solutions, computer criminals are also catching up.

Computer criminals enabled with a new wave of tools and techniques can easily crack into corporate networks. As a result, the computer crime graph is going to peak. The Committee of Experts on Crime in Cyber-Space, an international coalition, has called for a treaty for increased computer surveillance for law enforcement officials around the world.

What Are the Key Differences Between Forensic Accounting and Traditional Accounting?

Here're some of the best known differences between a Forensic accounting and Traditional Accounting in a glance;

1. A very obvious and discrete key difference which one can identify between a traditional auditor VS a forensic accountant is that :
The former is someone who checks the math accuracy in the accounting department while the latter is someone whom are looking behind these financial numbers find out what's not quite right.

2. The second differentiation is the "investigative intuition".
Intuition refers to the gut instinct which one may have to guide you to the appropriate direction as of where your investigation should start from. This is not text book earned, but rather something which can be earned through massive experiences. Most of the time, no investigation intuition is found nor required in the traditional accounting scope.

What Are the Key Differences Between Forensic Accounting and Traditional Accounting?

3. Traditional auditing is a process of auditing others' work to determine if they have followed the documented official policies, procedures and practices of the company. The determination is based on evidence. It is a matter of fact and not merely a matter of opinion. This kind of audits is required by financial intermediaries and the government depending on circumstances.

4. Traditional auditing focus on error identification and prevention. Prevention is the result of an effective internal control system. The auditor reviews the effectiveness of the internal control system by sampling transactions of some agreeable percentage. Materiality is the accounting way of designating the importance of a transaction or an event.

5. Traditional Auditors use statistics to determine the probability that material errors will or will not be identified and the possibility of its happening. This is a concern since only a sample of transactions and events will be reviewed. The system of internal control is evaluated. It is argued that If the internal control system is deemed to be highly effective, then material errors are not probable.

6. Traditional auditors typically adhere to the generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS) as promulgated by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). External auditors are typically reviewing whether an organization is following GAAP. GAAP are promulgated by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) .This denotes that means that auditors are affected by all three of these organizations and must stay current with old, new and changing standards and principles issued by all three of these organizations.

7. Instead, forensic accountants use physical evidence, testimonial evidence, documentary evidence and demonstrative evidence to help identifying suspect and culprits.

8. For Forensic Accounting, any type of evidence can be used as information, be it documentary paper, a computer video or audio. However, it requires an expert to interpret the evidence and present it. Demonstrative evidence is not actual evidence. It is just an aid to understanding just like a model of a body part or pictures or other devices are used to help clarify the facts.

9. Forensic Accountant is often asked to serve as an expert witness for a lawsuit or criminal case in a court, the forensic accountant needs to have applied reliable principles and methods to sufficient facts or data. The expert witness is a recognized specialist relative to the principles and methods applied to the sufficient facts or data.

10. A forensic accountant typically need to possess the expertise and skills in these 2 fields : Private investigator and Accountings are what specifically required to be a great forensic accountant. On the other hand, there is no such requirement in the traditional accounting space.

SIM Card Readers Can Only Recover A Tiny Fraction Of The Data Available From A Cell Phone

As soon as a person realizes they need to recover important information that was deleted from a cell phone the first thing they would naturally do is turn to the Internet. But unfortunately if you search for "recover deleted text messages" you're likely to come up with misleading information. Most of the web sites you'll find will be hawking cheap over the counter SIM card readers as the solution to your data recovery problem. These web sites actually try to give the impression that a do it yourself SIM card reader will recover all the deleted data from your phone.

Unfortunately this is simply not the case. A SIM card reader can only recover the last numbers called and received and the last few text messages. Maybe 10 if you're lucky. Also these readers only work on devices that have SIM cards and that excludes the majority of devices out there. There worst part of this story is that the vast majority of these cheap devices are also SIM card writers and can just as easily delete all the data off the SIM and wipe it clean. That means you will have to contact the telephone carrier and obtain the IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identification) and the ICCID (International Circuit Card Identifier in order to clone your SIM and get the phone working again.

If you really need to recover deleted data from a cellular phone what you really want to do is submit the device to a professional forensic data recovery process. If you do, the evidence can be used in court and the phone will be returned to you undamaged and unaltered.

SIM Card Readers Can Only Recover A Tiny Fraction Of The Data Available From A Cell Phone

A Cellular phone investigation is the cutting edge in legal high tech intelligence gathering.

A Forensic Examination Can Retrieve:

- Deleted Text Messages
- Deleted SMS Messages
- Detailed Call Records; Dialed/ Received/ Times/ Durations
- Deleted Pics & Graphics
- Deleted Video
- Contact Names & Phone Numbers
- Deleted Address Book
- Email Addresses
- Deleted Caller ID
- Sext Messages
- Other Deleted Data

This is far more information than any do it yourself SIM card reader could copy off your phone. Plus a real forensic data recovery will recover far more text and far older texts than just the last ten if you get lucky. Remember to read the fine print a SIM card reader will only work on GSM phones where the texts and phone numbers are stored on the SIM card itself. A full forensic data recovery will recover data not only from the SIM but also the internal memory of a cellular phone.

If you are serious about recovering this data and you can't afford to make any mistakes and possibly destroy all your data you must do the smart thing and avoid SIM card readers at all costs. It is simply not worth wasting your time and money while possibly destroying your data.
